Whole Wheat Tawa Pizza

Bring the kids in the kitchen for do it yourself Pizza night!

Pizza is always a hugely popular dinner choice with my kids. My daughter has been asking me to make one all week. I wanted to make something healthy, so I choose Atta(Whole wheat flour that I got from my local Indian shop) to make the pizza base. I also wanted a quick recipe so made it without yeast.

As you can see, my kids could not wait till I was done with my photo shoot:). Cooking dinner together end of the day is a nice way to wind down from the day. This one is an easy recipe where kids can measure the ingredients, toppings and also knead the dough.

I kept the base ready and my kids got to make there own Pizzas with their favorite topping. Making Pizza on a tawa(griddle/pan) takes time. I used my cast iron skillet and cooked in very low flame until the base was crisp.

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/4 cup atta/wheat flour

3/4 teaspoon baking powder

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

3 teaspoon olive oil

3 tablespoon plain yogurt

water for kneading

SAUCE

1 tablespoon cooking oil

2 large onions minced

3 large roma tomatoes, minced or pureed

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 teaspoon red chili powder/cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

Cheese, mozarella grated as needed

toppings - onions, peppers, pineapple etc

oregano, pizza seasoning as per liking

Pizza Dough- Mix all the ingredients together - flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, oil and yogurt. Add water little by little and make a soft dough. It should not be sticky. Cover it with a cling wrap and set it aside for 20mins.

For the sauce- Heat oil in a pan, add the minced onions and cook until it turns light golden in color. Add the tomato, chili powder, turmeric and salt. Stir well. Add 1/2 cup of water and close a lid. Cover and cook for ten minutes or until all the water has evaporated. We need a thick paste. Once you reach the desired consistency, switch off the flame and allow it to cool down completely.

Pizza base - Knead the dough again and divide into four equal parts. Working one at a time, roll the dough into round disc. It should not be too thick nor too thin. Using a fork, prick on one side of the disc. Heat an iron skillet and place the rolled pizza disc with the pricked side up. Let it cook under low flame. You will end up with a golden crust on the bottom. Remove from the pan, spread the required amount of sauce on the crust side( uncooked should be on the bottom), sprinkle cheese as needed. Use topping as per your liking - Onions, pepper, pineapple etc and seasoning. Place the pizza back in the tawa and cover with a lid. Keep the temperature low until the cheese melts. Slowly raise the heat, keep checking the base( you dont want to burn them). The base needs to get a little hard and crisp, once you reach this switch off the flame. Add extra seasoning and serve them immediately!
